'Fraidy Cat

It's time to renew my driver's license.

I don't know why, but every time I get that notice in the mail, I get a panicky feeling. It's ridiculous. I've passed the test in three states and have been driving for -- well, never mind how many years.

And yet I'm terrified I will get there and forget everything I ever knew. The last time I was stuck on identifying the round sign. I sat there until the examiner said softly, "Choo-choo-choo..."

"Railroad crossing!" I yelled.

I passed.

Yesterday I was all ready to go. I drove to the license office and went in. Wall to wall people. I left.

I called this morning for an appointment and couldn't get one until two days before my license expired. The examiner told me to come in next week, suggesting a time when they didn't have as many applicants. So I will have to "gird my loins" (whatever that means) and trek back up there.

Is there a routine blip in your road that makes you frantic? For some, it's the annual mammogram. For others, the annual performance review.

We all have fears. Some are rational, some are not. But we face them anyway, to ensure our health, our careers, or just that we can get to the mall, church, and library.

And when we do face our fears and conquer them, don't we feel good about ourselves! Mental high fives all around.

Until next time.

  1. I hate the blank sign portion of the driver's test. I freeze up on this part every time!!

  2. I typically forget about the sign test until I'm there lol. Maybe that's why they let the lines get so long...so we'll have time to study. Well, maybe not

  3. In our state, we don't have to take the test every time we renew our license. We just pay the price, let him take our photo, and we're good. Don't you wish you lived here????

  4. I haven't taken a test since 2007 and it was the written test only to get my license in Oklahoma after we moved back. I admit I was more nervous about the picture than the test because I hadn't planned to test for my license that day but my dd badgered me into it while she was getting hers. I'd been working all day with hubby--who just happened to be taping a house we'd recently finished sheetrocking. :( I've had to renew once since then and guess what? Yep, I was on the way home from a week long job with hubby when he stopped in and said do it while we were there... Again with no makeup and bedraggled hair! What's with these people I call family???!!!??? Do they NOT get that I'm a famous romance writer and image is EVERYTHING???!!!???

I'm positive you'll do great, Sandy-- as long as you get to brush your hair first. ;)

  5. I haven't taken a test since the first time I passed my driver's license at 18, in Montreal. When I moved to the US, I was happy to learn that the dear US of A will accept foreign driver's license without testing from only two countries... Canada, and guess which other one?

    Germany.

    Lucky me!

Why do you need to pass a test again?
